East Coast Tribal Work Exchange: A Journey of Culture and Connection

More Than Just a Visit—Be Part of the Tribe
Organized by the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration, the East Coast Tribal Work Exchange has been fostering meaningful connections between travelers and Indigenous communities since 2013. It all began with the "Let’s Paint Jingpu Together" project, and over the years, the initiative has expanded to include unique tribal villages along the East Coast, such as Jiqi, Shuilian, Xinshe, Maogong, Jingpu, Qimei, Bisilian, Dulan, Donghe, and more. Each year, new communities join this initiative, bringing fresh themes and experiences for volunteers.

During this four-day, three-night experience, volunteers and tribal members work hand in hand to bring meaningful projects to life—whether it’s mural painting, restoring traditional homes, or building eco-friendly trails. In return, volunteers get an authentic taste of tribal life. From fishing and archery to paddling through cultural waterways, weaving with pandan leaves, and crafting banana fiber art, you’ll step into the daily rhythm of the tribe, learning traditions firsthand and forming lasting friendships.

This is not just a getaway—it’s a chance to live, learn, and grow with the tribe. If you’re looking for an adventure that leaves an impact, join us and become part of the story!

Why East Coast Tribal Work Exchange?

Building Bridges with the East Coast’s Indigenous Communities

With deep respect for the land and its people, the ABEZ team has built strong partnerships with Indigenous tribes along Taiwan’s East Coast. Through genuine conversations and immersive experiences, we have come to understand the daily rhythms of tribal life. By seeing the community through a fresh perspective, we also uncover hidden gems and cultural treasures that even locals may have overlooked.

The breathtaking beauty of the East Coast is undeniable, but we constantly ask ourselves—how can we create more opportunities for this region? While exploring innovative travel experiences beyond traditional tourism, we noticed a common challenge: a shortage of manpower in tribal communities. In the long run, revitalizing local industries can encourage young people to return home, but in the short term, we wondered—could we help bridge this gap while fostering deeper cultural understanding?

This question led to the creation of the East Coast Tribal Work Exchange—an opportunity for volunteers to contribute their time and effort in exchange for an authentic cultural experience. Unlike typical tourism or work-exchange programs, this initiative is built on mutual understanding, shared experiences, and friendship. Volunteers cover their own travel and accommodation costs, and in return, they participate in meaningful labor or cultural projects while immersing themselves in tribal life.

More than just a trip, it’s a journey of connection, contribution, and cultural exchange. Join us and become part of something truly special!
