Walk along Baliwan Creek, as you follow residents on a tour of this tribe. The Fakong Tribe has a rich cultural heritage, with an endless history and fascinating stories. Stroll along handicrafts street to see traditional techniques being passed on, such as rattan weaving, liquor making, ramie weaving, and umbrella plant weaving, as well as traditional structures and octagonal meeting hall. These are all part of the local culture. Let’s go to Fakong! Experience the beauty of authentic indigenous community life.
In Fakong, the day starts with a visit to a vegetable stall run by an elderly woman (Ina). Here, local ingredients are collected. If it is summer, perhaps it is mountain bitter melon, which can be blanched and topped with garlic, chili peppers, and soy sauce to create a cold appetizer. Or, it could be mollusks camouflaged on reef rocks. Blanching them for 7 minutes creates a delicious seafood dish. The cooking methods are simple and bring out the natural flavors. Come and taste the delicious foods of Fakong together with its residents!
For the children of Fakong, the forest and the 11th borough agricultural road are their playgrounds. Do you believe that shellflower stalks can be used to make bird calls? With skillful hands, what kinds of toys can be made from the giant elephant’s ear plant, silver grass, Taiwan persimmon flowers, and reeds? Follow the residents of Fakong, as they return to a time of childlike wonder and play. Enter Nature’s classroom to learn about the plants around you as you start out on an ecotour that is like no other.
Don’t miss out on a visit to Fakong’s distillery. Listen to female elders (Ina) tell the story of glutinous rice wine distilling and learn how it is done. It begins with gentle separation of the grains of steaming hot glutinous rice, followed by the addition of fermentation starter. After mixing well, it is bottled. Many unique distilling techniques are demonstrated in Fakong. Distill a bottle of Fakong liquor and treasure every moment of your journey.
Visit this community’s crafts workshops to gain an in-depth understanding of the history and culture of Fakong. The people of this tribe are working to preserve ancient beauty and wisdom through the revival of traditional handicrafts. The leaves of the umbrella plant spread outward, resembling an umbrella frame, from which it gets its name. Elderly women (Ina) of the tribe skillfully weave this plant to create items for daily use and decoration. Then, learn about ramie. Ramie is traditionally used for weaving cloth and, as such, is an important plant. Fibers are obtained from this plant following a multi-step process and are highly durable. It is said that a garment woven from ramie can last for decades. Ask Ina how to knead the fibers to make them ready for weaving a bag, which you can use to pack your memories to take home with you.
You have sat long enough. It’s time to get up and move around. Together with this community’s residents, prepare to re-experience childhood. Choose a Y-shaped branch and pare and polish it to produce your own unique slingshot. Enjoy the fun of making and using it. Come to Fakong to recapture your youth!
